About Namibia

Namibia lies on the south-western coast of Africa, where the Namib Desert meets the Atlantic Ocean. It is known for political stability, cultural diversity, remarkable wildlife and some of the world’s most dramatic landscapes.

The Republic attained independence on 21 March 1990 and was established as a sovereign, secular, democratic and unitary state. Its Constitution protects fundamental rights and provides for separation of powers between the executive, legislature and judiciary.

Namibia's communities and languages reflect a rich human story. Alongside English, recognised national languages include Afrikaans, German, Otjiherero, Khoekhoegowab, Oshiwambo, Rukwangali, Setswana and siLozi.
